Re: [tabtrailers] Update On Bear Attack Outside Of Yellowstone

Elly, another point--always try to be aware of wind direction. If confronted by a bear, and you can keep from panicking, move slowly to the side, so that if you need to spray, it will not come back in your face.

We're getting ready to head up there soon for a week of camping. The t@b should help protect us, but I'm worried about the hiking trails. I heard that pepper spray is good for preventing bear attacks. Does anyone have any information about this?

Thanks,
Elly in Chandler, AZ

Don't know if it was posted here or not (been out camping) but the FWP did capture the sow grizzly and the cubs that were responsible for the death of a Michigan man and the mauling of a Canadian woman (they also attacked a college aged man but he managed to fight them off) last week outside of YNP.  DNA linked the sow to the dead man so she was destroyed.  The cubs were placed in a Billings MT zoo and were said to be extremely malnourished which may be the impetus for the attack (basically the cubs were starving and the sow was looking for food for them).  Still extremely unusual in that this has been a wet spring and summer around here and there should be plenty of food.  An autopsy may reveal that the sow was ill and could not nurse her cubs and thus the attack.  For those who are still thinking or planning on going to YNP and staying in that surrounding area (which is beautiful) hopefully this will put an end to this type of thing at least for a while.  Montanaandy
