Does anyone know if the original configuration for this model included a way
of mounting the spare tire on the exterior? I don't see any place on the
shell for doing this. Also I don't see a place underneath the chassis that
this would be possible.

Hi Carroll,
The front bellypan section covers the area where the optional mount can be
fitted. Just cut into the bellypan just behind the front crossmember, then
cut all the way back (about 3') until you hit the second crossmember & stop.
Then cut sideways along the crossmember until you hit the "A" frame portion
of the chassis. Do this all of the way around & you will create a cavity
large enough to fit the spare. Refasten the edges of the remaining bellypan
to the frame members with large head pop rivets (available through Vintage
Trailer Supply.com). You will also want to add some aluminum sheeting to
cover the exposed plywood subfloor. The "weld nuts" necessary to mount the
carrier were installed at the factory so you won't have to worry about
mounting issues. New carriers are available from Airstream dealers or you
could get a used one from Ryan at RVrevive.com or any other Airstream
salvage yard you can find. I've done a number of these & it's not too
difficult. You don't need to be a Rocket Scientist to install it but it
helps if you know which way to turn a wrenchJ
