[tabtrailers] Re: Weather Radio

Our portable Radio Shack weather radio has the Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) feature AND a travel setting that identifies the strongest weather radio broadcast channel as our 'home' channel. It helps a lot when we are on the road. If it goes off it means the warning is for us- not someone half a state away. Checking or replacing the batteries in this radio is in our regular 'packing list' that we use for every trip- long or short.

We have camped where there was no weather radio reception. In those cases we have used local AM/FM and a map so we can accurately locate our position and interpret warnings. We never go anywhere without a map even when we are close to home.

Items we should all have (especially in winter) are GPS enabled cell phones and a GPS. Being able to call for help so we can be located via our phones GPS locator may save our lives if we get lost in a blizzard or on some washed out logging road in the middle of nowhere. We should all know how to enable/disable that feature on a phone and know the easy steps to get our coordinates from our GPS devices so we can tell them to someone by phone too. (If you have OnStar that is all supposed to be taken care of for you)

Remember that a worst-case scenario would include a power failure so we should all remember to have our travel survival kits re-stocked, updated and in the car at ALL times.

Phew! I didn't mean to post a travel survival reminder but it can't hurt!
