It's different for everyone. The best thing to do if you are a first timer is to make lists of the things you will do while camping. My lists include: shelter, cooking, food/fuel, sleeping, personal care (includes porta-potty), picnic/campsite, automotive/mechanical, travel necessities (includes maps, resrvations, documents, etc), clothing, energy (includes solar, batteries, generator), technology, bikes, and more.
If you cook with electricity and won't have a generator figure out how to make that meal with the gas stove. If there won't be a water source bring all the water you will need to cook, wash, bathe and put out your campfire. If you are bringing a generator be sure to bring enough gas to run it, etc.
Pretty much try to think through every task, what you'll need to do each task and pack accordingly.
Once there, generally try to economize everywhere you can. Use water and electricity with great economy. Create as little trash as possible and be sure to store your trash in ways that eliminate smell, contain icky fluids and keep the critters from getting to it. Use wet wipes and hand sanitizer instead of soap and water when practical. Read a book instead of watching a movie to save battery power. Bottom line: it's better to economize regularly than fret over running out of stuff later.
You'll get better at boondocking the more you do it. For now don't be afraid to overpack- you'll use it on the next trip. Most important: don't beat yourself up if you forget something. Make a note of it for the next time out, adapt as needed now, continue to enjoy your time in the boonies. If you forget your book and DVD's- write the next great story. If you forget the coffee- drink an extra cup of water and take a mid-morning nap to compensate for the lack of caffiene.
