Jarod,
I still have the Excursion, and I've never doubted the trip computer
(till now :c), But I can run a trip in it and calc by hand. I should
mention that those fuel numbers were running cross state on the
backroads of minnesoata. moving at less than 60mph the whole way. The
F350 numbers were all hand calcs too. I could never get the same
mileage out of the Excursion as I did with the F350, always seemed like
it should be possible. But the Excursion is a heavier beast. I too
noticed the additional sway that was (is) felt by passing TRUCKs. I
attribute this to the shorter and narrower stance of the excursion
compared to the F350.
I always preferred the F350 myself, but the Kids needed to be carted
around for school/activities, and I was the only one that could drive a
stick, so we went to the Excursion. I've got 175k on mine and it just
keeps on going. I may get another F350, but I've also been pondering
getting a Bluebird school bus with front engined cummings, and allison
automatic and converting it into a toter home for 5th wheels and tow
behinds. A lot cheaper than going out and buying a 5 ton truck, which
would be roughly the equivalent. And if you figure in the remaining
seats at about 12- 15 people, well then it really starts to look
interesting.
how much does your Avion Weigh? My Excella comes in around 8500 lbs
fully loaded (7100 dry).

Bob,
Are your mpg figures based on the trip computer or calculated by hand?
I pulled my 30 foot Avion from the Gulf Coast to the Keys last year with
a 2000 Excursion 4x4 with a chipped (for economy) 7.3 diesel and my best
tank yielded 12.5 mpg when calculated by hand and even given the 5%
extra because the speedometer and odometer were off due to a slightly
larger tire size. This was on flat ground and many miles of highway
driving (not interstate) that should have provided about the best fuel
economy possible. I hope your figures are right but I'm always concerned
that people compare mpg using trip computers that are off by some order
of magnitude. I did get 18 mph when I was not towing.
Incidentally, the Excursion was a great tow vehicle but we had sway
when being passed by 18 wheelers. I used my 2005 F-250 crew cab diesel
this year and got between 11.5 and 12 mpg towing the same rig on the
same trip. I used a Silverado gasser with the 6.0 V8 three years ago on
the same trip and got 9 mpg.

My next (and current vehicle) is a 2002 Excursion (7.3) auto, 4x4, it
gets 18-19mpg, and 16-17 towing. Not quite a good, but it can haul a
lot of people at the same time.
