Well, all this talk about proper TV, and all the discussions I've listened to previously, has made me cast a baleful eye at my pathetic wannabe 5.7l 4wd '07 DC Tundra. Of course, when I bought it I was on top of the world, thinking I'd bought my forever truck. Now, towing a Bambi isn't a big challenge, even loaded down like my truck was in many cases, but we traveled over some terrain in SE Montana that Wally probably would have used a mule for.
Sooo, after all the convincing, I've been out shopping for 3/4 and 1 ton trucks, new and used. New, mainly, to drool over. My Bambi is for sale and I"m moving up the food chain in Airstreams.
As some of you know, I'm still preparing my house for sale in a lousy market, and today I had a landscape crew out in their big International DT 4700 monster truck with the steel sides that look like a roll off container, which it is. Holds tons of mulch, most of which was still in the truck a few minutes ago when they got stuck coming up a hill between my garage and the top of the mountain...an incline and curve I don't like to take even with the Tundra because it's tight, and steep, and if it is muddy, it's a mess, even in 4wd. Well, they somehow finagled the International down there and of course, couldn't get back up the hill. Knocked on the door, sheepishly, asking if I had a chain. I did, but looking at this behemoth vs my little 1/2 ton with attitude, I was convinced we were all going to be calling AAA. I live in a fairly rural area, so this could be a while.
We hooked up, I put Mr. T in 4wd low gear, and we started up the curve. Got stuck. Slid all over the place. Did I mention it was sleeting? One of the guys pulled a branch out from under my tires and I hit it again. Figured I'd just carve a new road if I had to. Then, it started to pull, slowly, up that doggone hill and curve and voila, Big Truck was out of trouble, and I was looking at my muddy, beat up, reputation besmirched Tundra in a whole new light. I don't' know how many tons we pulled, but it was impressive. The crew was all cheering, blowing kisses, etc. Well, maybe not the kisses, but it was a happy moment.
I'm still listening to all this scary stuff about weight-loading, and power, and going downhill with crosswinds and a too-big trailer, and I appreciate all the great info here. But just so you know, I"m not as frantic about replacing Mr. T just yet. Good truck. Deserves a car wash.
