Hi Wes,
I've had my water heater make a noise for a few seconds after it
first lights. I think it may just be a little on the lean side and
doesn't burn right until it's warmed up a little. If you go outside
and open the access door and watch it as it lights, I think you will
see that it burns way down inside the burner tube for a few
seconds. As long as it stops and burns correctly (near the mouth of
the burn tube) after a few seconds, I think it's okay. Adjusting the
mixture (little slide thing with air holes) will usually fix it but
it will need to be done over again if you go to a different altitude
(like up in the mountains). The mixture is right when the flame is
blue with just an occasional flare of orange... if it's too lean it
will get noisier (kind of a roaring sound).
