Carol, of course it will vary with the terrain. The reference material is based on level terrain as well as a hitch that is the right height for towing, which also can come into play. It can be confusing for anyone not familiar with the apparatus and accustomed to making these kinds of adjustments. And descriptions can easily be misinterpreted also--for example, when you use "low side" I assume you are referring to the height of that end of the trailer with respect to the ground, as opposed to the low side of the site. (This is where a picture comes in handy.) It also takes some experience to figure out how to adjust for those mistakes. In the case you mention, you could have (and maybe did) used the levelers to support the front end temporarily in order to loosen and adjust the jockey wheel main shaft.

I need to comment on that. How low you drop the main shaft depends on how the site is. If the front of the camper is the low side then you don't need to drop the shaft as much and just crank down the wheel. If the rear of the camper is the low end then drop the main shaft closer to the ground then crank. A couple of times I've lowered the main shaft too much and couldn't get the trailer level front to back.

I'm printing all this out and if I still have questions once my trailer arrives I'll ask specifically what I'm confused on then. Thank you very much for these links.
