[tabtrailers] Re: Subaru tow capacity

I have a 2003 Subaru Legacy Outback with a tow capacity of 2400#. My T@B is listed at under 1500# empty. I have been very pleased with the Subaru's ability to tow my T@B in spite of not having the transmission cooler (talked to the Sube shop manager and he didn't feel it necessary, but I would like to have one installed because I think it's a good idea).

I live in Appalachia and so travel on roads with lots of ups and downs, and also interstates with lots of long grades. I have manual transmission and so need to gear down at times but find that driving smart is my best option - not pushing the car hard, taking advantage of terrain, thinking ahead, and so on.

I am careful to avoid putting much weight in the T@B - I load as much weight as I can in the car when I travel. Most of what is in the camper is light and bulky - bedding, clothing, lightweight kitchenware. If something's heavy, it goes in the car, even if it's an inconvenience to have to move it into the camper when I set up. And I travel with an empty water tank.

I don't travel a lot and I don't go further than about 400 miles in a day. So far, so good. I got the T@B four years ago, not knowing any better in terms of using a higher-rated tow vehicle, and hoping for something that my pre-existing car could handle. I've been very happy, had no issues, and make an effort to think ahead and drive smart.

Driving on flat land, I have to keep reminding myself that I'm pulling the T@B as it tows so easily.

Good luck!

Sue
