I have a 2008 Outback 2.5i automatic that has a 2700 lb towing capacity. When I got the T@B I had a transmission cooler installed and a towing kit at UHaul. It did fine, but really worked hard when I tried to drive over 60 MPH. I live in Florida and towed it into the North Carolina mountains, again no problem as long as I kept my speed in check. I always load the T@B to capacity because loads in the trailer translate into roughly 10% of the load in tongue weight. In other words if I put 100 lbs in the trailer it only adds about 10 lbs of "load" to the tow vehicle. You have to watch total payload on the tow vehicle as well as towing weight and tongue weight. Tongue weight of the trailer is added to the payload of the tow vehicle, not gross trailer weight. My problem was that 2 adults, 2 large dogs and all our gear adds up and I think I was overloading the Outback. It was even worse when dry camping and bringing generators and gas, and firewood. Even when not bringing the generators and wood, sometimes fully loaded I could see the rear shocks sagging and when driving at night I'd get flashed by oncoming drivers because they thought I had my high beams on.
I ended up getting a Tacoma pickup because I really like our Outback and didn't want to run it too hard and ruin it, and the truck gives us lots more options for bringing extra stuff and a storage area we don't have to worry about getting dirty and stinky.
The Outback can work well. You just have to look at how much stuff you want to bring and really pay attention to how you load it.
