George,
There are several brands of "smart converter/charger on the market.
The one that I am most familiar with [and the one that I installed in my '76
Tradewind to replace the original Univolt] is the Progressive Dynamics
"Intellisync" with the Charge Wizard. I am also very pleased with my
choice. [I think Airstream is now using the Magnatek converter - which I
have no experience with.]
Camping World periodically has them on sale. You can also get a factory
refurbished (and guaranteed) direct from the Progressive Dynamics web site,
under "bargains" at a substantial discount.
Originally, the Charge Wizard (which makes the unit a true "smart charger,"
) was a plug in option. Now they offer the converter with the Charge Wizard
circuitry built in.
These units are a MAJOR improvement over the original single voltage/current
Univolt (which was notorious for cooking batteries if plugged into shore
power and not using the battery. Also, the Intellisync is significantly
lighter and QUIET - no hum or buzz. The only noise it makes is a low fan
noise (a whisper fan) which comes on only when the unit is under a heavy
load (low batteries and/or a heavy load). These units can also handle more
than one battery (connected in parallel).
Installation is relatively easy.
