RE: [A/S] Locked out

We had a similar problem. The top pin holding the shaft in place (I'm not sure of the actual names) broke. We were on a trip so had to rig it the best we could using a tiny nail to try to get that shaft to stay in place. It worked for a while but by the time we got home and locked the door after unloading everything, we could no longer get it to work. We called a locksmith but he had no luck getting it opened. I did the same thing you did and crawled through the access door at the bedroom and opened the door from the inside. The locksmith was then able to remove the latch. We saw that the shaft had slipped down behind the bottom track. The locksmith reattached the shaft with two little cotter pins. It works great now. He apologized for charging us $50 but he spent about an hour before I tried the access door. We were delighted that it only cost $50.

I hope yours will be an easy fix.

Ben,

How you fix it depends on the year of your coach. I know you mentioned it earlier but I don't have your original post.
If the, older, outside lockset is wider than it is tall there are a number of pieces that can be broken including the latch handle to shaft pin, the shaft lever inside the lockset or the actuating pin on the bolt shaft.
If the, newer, outside lockset is pretty much square it is most likely the actuating tab inside the lockset.
Either way you will have to remove the lockset to determine the cause.
Parts for the older lockset may still be available from Airstream through an Airstream dealer.
Parts for the newer lockset are no longer available. Airstream has offered are replacement. In some cases a clever metal worker can repair the lockset.
