Hey folks,
How complicated is it to change a single battery on a 1999 Safari 27' to a dual battery, and add solar?
Thanks!

Hi Anne,
In my humble opinion installing a solar system is not a DIY project… at least not for most folks. The cost can run from a few hundred to about $5k for a full blown system. You might call AJL Solar (in Arizona) 928-453-9288 or cell 602-363-7656. Alan is a licensed, bonded and insured electrician. He did a good job for me and you can get his opinion for free (pick his brains a little).
I'm guessing that your trailer only has one battery compartment? The easy way to fix this is to install two new AGM (sealed ) batteries that don't have to be sealed off from the living space and vented. They are more expensive but they last a lot longer. It is possible to add a second battery compartment but it would be difficult and/or expensive.
For most people two batteries, two solar panels (65 watt or larger), and a 1,500 watt inverter will run ever thing in your trailer (one thing at a time) except the A/C and water heater of coarse. There are several other small things like the charge controller, 200 amp catastrophic fuse and double 0 welding cable with ring connectors that are part of the job if it's done right.
My system (in case you're wondering) consists of four 75 watt solar panels, four AGM batteries, charge controller, 2KW inverter (that also doubles as a 100 amp battery charger when plugged into shore power) and the small stuff as above. This system has been in service for 8 years.
Take your time and do your homework! Best of luck,
Tony
