I'm getting a slight hiss from some of the LED arrays, and my

Do you think using coax instead of just insulated copper would be better?

Yes, a properly shielded cable should help with the RF noise sources inside the Faraday cage with you. Also you might run the antenna up and down a couple of times in case it has dirty connections between the segments with a coating of road gunk, it is all the way up isn't it? If your one favorite station comes in week you can try adjusting the length of the antenna. Radio Shack sells a car radio extension cable that should have the right connector on it (there are a couple of different sizes). On the other hand, if you never plan to reinstall a car type radio you can just cut off the connector and solder the clip right on the coax. Another trick that I have used for short wave reception in my trailer is to just buy a roll of #18 hook-up wire, put a weight on one end and throw it up in a tree then connect the other end to your radio antenna. There are many books written about antennas and other ways to improve radio reception, it can get very hairy.
