Maybe not LIVE there, but it's still a GREAT place to visit.
I've been with my new family ( wife, 15 yr old daughter, 10 yr old son and 13 yr old cat) three times in the last two years in the Airstream. We stay at Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City which is a 10 minute walk from a PATH station that takes you into Manhattan.
We've seen 6 Broadway shows, all with 1/2 price tickets, walked pretty much all of midtown, Central Park, Downtown and Lower Manhattan, including the East Side, Bowery, Little Italy, Chinatown and Greenwich Village, at all hours of the day and night..
And felt safe all of the time.
Hunter, it's not like it was in the 50's, for one thing the Carnegie Deli doesn't have surly Jewish waiters anymore, they're mostly cheerful very young Asians. But it's certainly a LOT better than it was 20 years ago. Time Square is actually a little too Disney-ised for me.
Official disclaimer - I have not been reimbursed in anyway for this commercial and the advise is worth exactly what y'all have paid for it.

I wouldn't live there now, but it was a great place to grow up in the
50s. As a little kid I could get anywhere in the city without having to
beg my mother to drive me.
I rode horses twice a week.
There was theatre, movies, restaurants..... Saturdays were spent sitting
on a lifesize horse in the boys' shoe department in Best & CO. Nice
Sundays were spent at the Central Park Zoo, rainy Sundays at the Natural
History Museum.
My only fears were Russia, King Kong climbing up the side of the
apartment building and the alligator under the bed.
