The real issue is the inside handle, this handle is 'floppy' and appears to have lost most of its 'connectictivty' to the lock - (sorry - its really hard to describe...) so when you close the door the latch don't operate fully with the result of the door latch banging into the frame...

Oh, okay. Well take the inside face plate off (three or four screws, I think). Then you should be able to see the wear on the parts. I've worked on several Airstream locks (including a'74) and I'm having trouble remembering which is which. But I think a new piece can be fabricated. You may need to consult a machinist if you are not very handy. Also any lock smith should be able to supply you with a new lock cylinder and key at minimal cost.
