[A/S] Re: Solar Collectors

I would like to add my agreement to the previous posts.
I will also throw in a couple comments as my system has been in use for
quite a while.

Regarding inverters, at least with my life style , I have not seen the
need for a true sine wave inverter. We have 1000 watt modfied square
wave inverters in both the truck and the trailer. Mostly though they
are just used for power tools, electric chain saw etc. Actually I have
not even used the trailer inverter this trip. WE don't seem to have
anything that really requires a sine wave. The TV and radio are both 12
volt and we pulled the microwave since we just used it as a bread box
most of the time anyway. The only thing requiring 110 volts is the
charger for the laptop and we usually use a small inverter for that.

The MPPT controller would appear to be the way to go. Our controller
predates that technology. My only concern, which may be unfounded, is
the possibility of RF noise from all the switching circuits being
heard in my Ham radio gear, a problem I had with a PWM controller. My
specialty concepts controller just runs up to a preset voltage and shuts
off..

The charger is an older Magnetek ferro resonant unit. The back up
generator is a conventional Honda EM 600 I bought 30 years ago. No
point in replacing it until it wears out.
A bonus i have found with the older generator and converter is that if
I set the generator frequency a little off 60 cycles the regulation of
the converter degrades and I can maintain a higher charging rate when
charging from the generator.

I switch off the magnetek most of the time and only charge as needed on
the rare occasions we have shore power. I avoid floating the batteries
for any length of time on shore power.

The whole works is monitored by a trimetric 20-20 meter which is
invaluable. Changing to LED lighting was probably the best single item
controlling power consumption.

While some of this is pretty " dark ages" by todays technology I
must be doing something right as my golf cart batteries will be 9 years
old in june.
