The seams and joints of our metal trailers move a lot, because of
expansion and contraction in heat and cold, and the jiggling of going
down the road.

Vulkem never really dries out, so it stays flexible for a really long
time. Silicone seems to stay kind of soft, but it sneakily lifts away
from the surface underneath, and water and mold get under there pretty
quickly.

Vulkem is a mess to apply, however.

When I got my trailer, there was ample evidence of leaks, so I dug out
(with a wooden or plastic tool) all the old cracked stuff, along with
lava flows of silicone. Mineral spirits dissolves both of them, so
invest in a gallon and many rolls of paper towels to wipe up.

Some people have developed ways to reapply it neatly, but I use my
fingers to push it into the cracks, and then clean up with mineral
spirits and more miles of paper towels. Messy and labor intensive. But
after 40 years the old Vulkem is still gooey in many places.
