We had a water pump cycling problem last year. Kept us awake for a while
until I realized what was happening and turned off the switch. Eventually
we found that we had a cracked toilet valve - a relatively simple fix, but
until the carpet got wet, we didn't know where the water was coming from.
Prior to the wet carpet, we had a small drip out the bottom of the gray tank
housing. Thought we had a bad tank. When the carpet got wet, our focus
changed, since water doesn't usually flow uphill (heh).
Good luck in finding your culprit.
