Anne, you might want to try this easy "trick":
(1) Remove the offending hard drive from the old computer. (Normally a
very easy task - HD's usually are easily accessible under an access
plate, usually on the underside)
(2) *Carefully* (= no static elec, please) take it to your nearest
computer supplier (Radio Shack, etc) and purchase a USB enclosure to
fit.
(3) You now have an "external HD". Plug it into any handy USB port.
A side benefit is that if you keep the HD, no one else can access your
old files.
