But is a 15 YO unit as efficent as a new one?

While the yearly routine maintenance (ie clean condenser coils, squirrel
cage blower, oil fan motor, pull evaporator cover and clean evaporator
coils) is
not as easy as say, cleaning the inside air filters, it is not all that
difficult and properly maintained, a 15 year old AC will produce exactly the
same level of cooling performance as a new one. If a person has a
preference to replace periodically rather than maintain, that is a
acceptable, but usage in of itself has nothing to do with the performance of
the unit (again assuming proper maintenance). I will acknowledge that most
users have likely NEVER had their AC unit properly maintained and it can be
difficult to find a qualified individual to do such. I also understand that
most users also have NO desire to crawl up on their Airstream roof and mess
with the AC, so I do understand why so many just replace the AC when
anything goes wrong, but understand that in most cases, the units are
totally repairable regardless of what is wrong (even a compressor failure)
for less than the cost of a new unit.
