Hello Vintage Airstreamers,
I've been a part of this group going back to the time when we had a beautiful 1973 Argosy camper which we sold in 2004. I've continued reading postings to this day and have learned a lot from the collective wisdom of this group which even helped me in other areas of my automotive endeavors (tire recommendations, batteries, etc.). For instance, we love the Michelin tires we just last year put on our 2000 Expedition, partly at recommendation of this group.
My wife and I recently purchased a 25 Ft. 2003 SOB trailer which seems right for our needs at this point in life and it needs some TLC. Assuming that the group might indulge me with a few questions relating to some of the common aspects of all travel trailers, I'd like to pose a few questions to the group:
1. This trailer is dual axle and has three matching Goodyear Marathon tires (date code 2902), which I'm sure are original, and one mis-matched car tire. The Goodyears are sized ST175/80R13 and the automotive tire is a 185/70R13 (date code 2005). I know that the group will recommend a new set of tires and I believe that Goodyear Marathons made in the USA are, once again, considered desirable. Is this true? Or are there better tires out there for a reasonable cost?
2. I will probably want to obtain a spare tire/wheel to haul with us. How can I determine size of wheel needed?
3. The A & E awning is pretty well deteriorated in the first wrap, otherwise is in good condition. Is there a way to have the fabric repaired or could the bad area simply be removed to yield an awning about a foot shorter. I could remove the fabric and ship it somewhere for repair if this is cost-effective vs. replacing the fabric with all new. Recommendations?
4. I need to purchase a weight-distributing hitch and am considering the Reese Pro-Series (Reese kit no. 49902) as it seems to be very favorably priced (about $250 with friction sway control delivered to my house). Does anyone have any experience with this hitch? Any cautions? I'm also considering the Eaz-Lift Elite hitch which costs about the same. Would this one be better?
5. The unit has an Atwood G6A-7 water heater which appears to be original (10 years) and the pilot light won't stay lit. Is this most likely a bad thermocouple? The water heater, otherwise, apears to be in good condition. If it's the thermocouple, is there a good on-line source to purchase just this part?
Thanks for any and all help the group might offer.
Happy Camping,
Richard Pittenger
