RE: [A/S] VIN, Vinyl stripe

Remove those unwanted RV decals and stripes

Weather and time aren't always friendly when it comes to RV decorations. The
more "graphics" and "decals" the manufacturers stick on the side, the more
the sun and weather seem to just degrade and fade them. Are you "stuck" with
a lot of faded stick-ons? Here's a few tricks to try to get rid of the
unwanted cling-ons.

Getting Steaming Mad. Yep, apply live steam to the infernal thing. A
commercial steamer is best, but the average "steam you own suit" type
steamer will work--but take a while longer. The trick is to thoroughly steam
the decal, then use a plastic putty knife to work under the edge of the
decal. Keep the steam on ahead of your work. The residue is said to come off
with an adhesive remover.

Liquid Decal Remover. One RVer swears by a commercial product sold in some
paint stores. Made by PPG, the product is called DuraPrep Prep 502 Fleet
Label/Decal Remover. The company recommends you paint the stuff on thickly
with a brush or roller, then let it sit anywhere from five minutes to two
hours until the decal simply "debonds." Come after the residue with a
scraper, squeegee, or stiff bristle brush. Some reluctant decals may leave a
residue best blasted off with a pressure washer. Go careful there! Sounds
great, but the product is recommended for "professional use."

Bug Off! Some say that a can of bug and tar remover (from the local auto
parts joint), liberally applied to a sun-warmed decal may do the job. The
follow-up to the spray is coming after it with a scraper, sliding under and
lifting up the recalcitrant decal. This will probably leave a layer of goo
on the side of the RV that should be hit again with yet more bug and tar
remover, then quickly followed up with a wipe rag.

Altogether, no solution to old decals looks like a project that you'd want
to undertake without appropriate applications of your favorite beverage.

Subject: [A/S] VIN, Vinyl stripe

I am trying to register my recently purchased 1995 Sovereign 21 from another
state. Good ole California requires that they identify 2 VIN ID's. I can
take her to the local AAA office and save a trip to the DMV and/or CHP if I
can find two complete VIN ID's. I Can only find one on the Federal label.
There is a partial on an outside label near the door and stamped on the
tongue. But CA requires the complete VIN. Could there be somewhere inside
where the VIN is hidden?

At her age, the blue vinyl trim stripe is faded and cracking in places. I
want to replace it. I have removed vinyl applications on fiberglass boats
using a hair dryer and putty knife. What is the proper procedure for
removing the stripe from aluminum? Has anyone had any success applying new
vinyl over the old?

Thank you, Marty Hawke, Arroyo Grande, CA
