600 injured, at least 1 killed today as anti-Mubarak protests continue in Egypt; foreigners hurry to catch flights going out

The health ministry of Egypt confirms that at least 1 person was killed and 600 more were injured today as anti-government and pro-Mubarak supporters clashed in Egypt’s capital hurling rocks, molotov cocktail, and other projectiles were hurled by the opposing sides.

Mubarak addressed the nation yesterday but did not announce plans of stepping down or resignation
instead for a peaceful transition as his term ends this coming September. The thousands of protesters seemed unsatisfied and continue to post at the main square of Cairo urging their leader for three decades to give up his post.

As locals continue to clash on the city streets, foreigners are scrambling to get out of Egypt turning the Cairo airport into a scene of chaos. Airlines are having a hard time to gain slots for take off and landing.

The United States, China, Japan, Britain, Canada, and Turkey have activated extra flights so they can evacuate their nationals as the volatile conditions continue in Egypt.

Chinese nationals are expected to have returned home today just in time for the Lunar Chinese New Year. Chian sent eight extra commercial flights to Hurghada, Luxor, and Cairo to evacuate their government personnel and more than 1,300 Chinese nationals in Egypt.

The government of Britain sent a chartered flight to Egypt charging about $486 for a flight going back to London. Slovakia also sent a flight to braing their expatriates home.

Travel agencies have also cancelled flights to Egypt while some have scheduled the same for the coming week stretching through March.

The GDP of Egypt has a big share of 11% coming from tourism. Back in 2009, around 12.5 million tourists went to Egypt contributing around $10.8 billion in revenue to the country’s economy.

U.S. hit by winter storm, thousands of flights cancelled

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 11:39 AM PST

About one third of the United States is buried in ice, sleet, and drifting snow as a fast moving winter storm hits the country causing air travel and even land travel for some states on a halt.

More than 5,000 flights going in and out of the United States were cancelled before noon Wednesday while majority have been put on hold in advance as the storm crosses the Northeast after ravaging the Midwest last Tuesday. The Logan Airport in Boston was closed for a short while morning of Wednesday but services resumed around ten o clock in the morning. Chicago meanwhile reported getting almost 20 inches of snow and still piling up.

Parts of New York already received more than a 12 inches of snow with experts forecasting a rise of around 0.75 inch before the weather changes from freezing rain and sleet to rain.

Last Tuesday, about 7,000 flights were not able to go out or enter the United States due to the snow storm. This week alone, there are around 13,000 flights cancelled as airports closed down in Texas through New England. So far, it has been the most disruptive snow storm this winter edging the blizzards last Christmas which grounded about 10,000 flights.

Airliners are hoping that the re-scheduling and re-booking of flights will be less of a trouble compared to what happened back in December since the volume of passengers now are relatively lower compared during the peak of the holiday season.
