Refurbishing my 95 Suburban is progressing nicely. The interior upgrades
are in place, and I have started on the mechanical work. The brakes, tires,
sloppy pitman arm, alignment....have all been done.
I took the thing on a test run, down the NJ Turnpike, to visit a friend in Delaware.
On that 200 odd mile trip, the thing averaged 16.4 MPG, which I gather is fairly
good for a 65-70MPH trip on a Suburban. I had just replaced the original air filter
but I have not yet replaced any of the other 'tune up parts'. They are all the factory
originals. I'm going to do a complete tune up, once the weather is in a co-operative
mood.
Has anyone had any experience, good, bad, or indifferent, with installing a 'performance
chip' in the engine computer? The actual installation of the chip is something I can do
easily enough, my self. I can easily see where tweaking the operating points could
produce an improvement. Somehow, I'm a touch skepical about getting the loosely
promised 10% MPG improvement. At least not without some possibly unacceptable
trade offs. Comments? Experiences??
