I"m trying to transfer files to Dropbox and my backup old laptop, but it will fail (big old Mac Pro) right in the middle of things and I have to start over. Very time consuming and frustrating.

Are you saying that the water heater gas won't stay on?
If so: On my trailer, the first hint that the propane is about to run
out is the water heater going out.
Turn on stove to check that you have propane and that the regulator is
working sort of.
I'm pretty sure that you have an electric start on there, and I dunno
how that works, but it has to do two things: something lets a little gas
out and something lights it. I hope someone will chime in here. I have
the old school one that needs to be lit. Tiresome, but easier to trouble
shoot.
Another possibility is that your regulator may not be managing the
pressure of the gas lines properly and the water heater's controls are
unhappy.
