Anne,
Take a big screwdriver and see of you can get the jaws to snap closed by pushing at the center back of the jaws If you have some graphite lubricant (it is a powder), you can spray some into the lock mechanism. Graphite is better than WD40 for the longterm but WD40 won't do damage, it just won't last very long. You should be able to get the jaws to snap closed. Once closed, just use the door handle to release. While I can't say that there is zero chance of something being broke, I have NEVER seen the type of latch on your rig to fail mechanically as there are the same design as used in automobile car latches and that design has a LONG, LONG history of not failing (think liability).
