Re: [A/S] Tow vehicle buying services

You can never tell  -

My first summer job between semesters at college was selling magazines door to door in rural PA.

There were two "on the spot" firing offenses. Getting caught in bed with a customer and skipping a house because of appearance.

And I think they were more serious about the second one. Please know - this was 1965 and a sizable percentage of the houses had little houses behind them because there was no indoor plumbing.

The supervisors went where we'd been that week and asked the people in the absolute worst looking houses if a salesman had been to talk to them. If not, FIRED.

They better pay attention to the little woman too.

I decided on the car to get, took myself and the two kids in to look at
it and was all but thrown out of the dealership.  He, the salesman in
the white buck shoes ( no , really) told me to come back with my husband.

I came back with my husband, and the shoes nearly wet himself trying to
sell him a car I didn't want.  Finally, my husband told the guy it was
my car and I could have what I wanted and walked out.  The kids and I
went back to our car shopping with the shoes in close attendance, but
embarrassed silence.  He didn't even go with us on the test drive.  I
did buy that car, but not there.  The kids and I barely restrained
ourselves from getting sticky chocolate all over the showroom in revenge.

It makes no sense at all to discourage a possible customer, no matter
what a long shot they may look like.  And besides, it's bad manners.

[A/S] Re: Tow vehicle buying services

What has always worked for me, is knowing the dealers cost price of the vehicle, and negotiating up from there instead of trying to go down from the MSRP. Here in Canada, we have www.carcostcanada, which for a fifty dollar investment will give me the cost of three autos, complete with all options that I am looking for. A subscription to the consumers guide should do the same in the U.S. but you folks may also have the equivalent of our carcostcanada site. My last three trucks, I have paid $1200 over dealer cost for. I walked into the dealership and said, how much do you feel you need to make on a truck sale. The salesperson said that the dealership liked to make $1200, which I then added to my cost analysis, and I offered him that amount for the truck I wanted. I had do be firm about it, but two dealerships have sold me trucks for that amount over dealer cost for the last three I have purchased. It required that I know specifically what I wanted, and that I drop fifty bucks on carcost for the dealer cost information (three times, for a total now of $150). In addition, carcostcanada gave me a $100 coupon redeamable when I purchased the vehicle in question. The dealerships I dealt with would not honor it, but for a hundred bucks, I was not going to a different province to get a truck. This has worked for me - others mileage may vary. Suffice to say that knowledge is power. Go onto the manufacturers web sites and "build" the vehicle you want, and print it out. Then go look at the stickers on the models normally stocked by your closest dealers and decide what you can and cannot live without, and then find the dealers cost and deal from there. If they will not deal, find another dealership. I had to do that on the first truck I got these prices on, but after that, my local dealership learned that I would go elsewhere, and began to deal fairly, or as fairly as one can expect from a car dealer, lol.

I seem to remember Joan Baez (sp?) had the same experience with a Jag dealership. In the same kind of clothes, nobody would show her

I always take life with a grain of salt . . . . plus a slice of lime & several shots of a very good chilled tequila.

Hmmm... that's better I thought. "Yes, I want a 300D, navy blue, sunroof, tan leather...." We walked into the showroom, the other
salesmen all watching as I sat down and wrote a check <g> Considering my last experience, buying this truck, I have little use for

Re: [A/S] Tow vehicle buying services

I would not let the cost of replacing tires govern my choice. That is
so small in comparison to usual costs for most of us that it is just
not important, IMO.

In addition to our 34 ft AS, last year we bought a Northern Lite
fiberglass slide-in camper and the truck loves it. We used it on a 28
day trip to/from the Albuquerque balloon festival (joined the AS
rally there - it was buddy) and found it very comfortable. We could
not tow the AS with it, though - it sticks out too far.

Re: [A/S] Tow vehicle buying services

I want to explore some of those inviting two tracks out west where Airstreams are just not a good choice. The idea of having a scaled down slide-in camper and the ability to tow the Airstream, or a utility trailer, has started to look interesting. Yes, I know there are six tires. The upside to a dually is stability in crosswinds, the downside is the extra cost of replacing tires. I haven't made a firm decision yet but I only know I won't go through the dealership dance again.

I have a one ton SRW and I can't argue.... I adore this truck.... in

I just wouldn't want to have to buy six 18" or 20" inch tires at once.

Yes, the more the truck weighs the less the tow capacity.

The heaviest Airstream isn't a challenge though.
