[A/S] Re: Trailer Tires

The 15" Conti's cost $139. each plus around $48. to ship the 4 of them to my local Tire Rack installation shop.  My shop owner services fleets. also, and is very impressed with the performance and durability of the Conti's on his customers Sprinter vans.  They go 45 to 50000 miles on them.  He does not see any failures, they are very round, and wear evenly and track well.  He feels they are extremely high quality and should be excellent for my trailer use.  The Marathons I had before the Maxxis were cracking around the belt line after 3 years and with their reputation I switched to the Maxxis to be safe.  The Maxxis are approaching 6 years old and still look brand new but again to be safe it is time to replace them. $200. plus per tire for the Maxxis is really too much for me.  At 65LBS of air either way, at least in my humble opinion, I doubt the trailer tires are all that much softer than the Conti VANCO's, which are also used on passenger
vans such as the VW Eurovan, which carry people directly over the front wheels and have a much stiffer suspension than relatively fresh Airstream axles.  I did replace my axles a few years ago because although not sagging, they were as hard as rocks and cabinets were a mess and rivets popping in the ceiling. The new axles softened the ride nicely and stopped all that.  I may be mistaken, but won't Airstream now deliver a new trailer with optional 16" truck tires from the factory now?

In my experience the ball bearing drawer slides that Airstream uses allow the drawer to be completely removed by pushing in a couple of little tabs on the outside of the slides. You might go to Home Depot or Lowes and play with a couple of different brands of drawer slides to get the feel of them.

Are the drawers removable or do you have to work around them?

Thanks,

Hi Tim,

I have a 2000 28' Excella with a rear queen bed (side ways).  But it maybe built the same way.  If you pull the drawers all the way out there should be a ¾" square cleat screwed to the floor.  And there should be a couple of others scattered around the inside edge of the box.  It will also be screwed to the cabinets on each side.  I plan to eventually remove the bedroom carpet and replace it with cork flooring even under the bed.

Good luck with your project,
Tony
